CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

all classes can be taught at all levels

Release Based Technique

Release Based Technique will focus on the movers connection to the ground, creating a stronger path for the pelvis into the legs and space. Alignment will be tuned by utilizing and noticing the weight, roundness and axis of the bones. Learning to take advantage of our reflexes and breath will give us more power and fullness in our dancing. We will take risks as movers, find the rhythm and playfullness in our bodies. There will be detailed and three dimensional choreographies to learn. We will work on retaining the dance, finding the stamina and detail to gesture.

Contact Improvisation

The basic experiemnt in finding the use of your partners form, touch, imagination, force and structure. Naming the senses and intelligence of the body as we form elaborate worlds within our improvisational minds. Safety measures are taught, known in the form of CI, that enhance the tuning of catching, falling, rolling, inverting and retreating at the appropriate times. Listening to our limitations as a physical and changing body will allow us to find our power and range.

Improvising Choreography

This is a vigorous class focused on the act of motion from the insideout. Dancers must be able to retain long phrases and stay aware while moving in and out of improvised structures. Working skeletally to find a strong and standing body, combining strength, abandon, release and direction whle moving upsidedown and three dimensionally. We will learn to focus and clarify the direction/ dynamic of our energies by constantly shifting the structures that allow us to dance from the inside to the outside.

Improvisation/ Composition

We will use improvisation as a vehicle towards a deeper awareness of ourselves and our depth of understanding our moving. Tasks to orient and clarify the expressive body. Working to shape the pure physical inspirations and imaginations we have in the mind, closer to the skin and to our audiences. Finding form in space and time that lives. This class will hopefully motivate what is already there in the recess of our histories. Naming the senses and intelligence of our dancing and improvisational structures, that balance the fine line between spontaneous choreographies and "free forming" the room around us with a trained awareness.

Partnering and Flying

Training the body to experiment with low inverted balances from the floor up to a partners arms and eventually into the air. Through examination of the arms in relationship to supporting weight the most efficient ways possible. Using the entire body as a source of structural support and weight baring surface. Finding comfort in the world upside down. Trusting, alone and in pairs, the body falling in space as a beautiful constant choreography.

Alignment & Upside Down Techniques

Working skelatally to find a strong and standing body. Resting in passive poses to open the body. Practicing the act of waiting and falling upwards. Much of this class's focus is on softening the spaces around our joints and active breathing. Mobility and freedom in the small and larger experiences of taking the whole body on a three dimensional ride upsidedown.
